Tips and tricks

Click Shortcuts in the header to see every shortcut. On a Mac, press Cmd where these docs say Ctrl, except in Ctrl+Space and Ctrl+Tab, which stay on the Control key.

  • Type / at the start of a bullet to change its type.
  • Or type one of these at the start of a bullet, then Space: #, ## or ### for a heading, [] or [ ] for a checkbox, three backticks for code (```ts sets the language), $$ for math, and --- for a divider.
  • Type [[ to refer to another bullet.
  • In code, math and tables, use Ctrl+Tab to indent the bullet, and Ctrl+Enter to leave it.
  • Ctrl+F searches the whole document.
  • Alt+← and Alt+→ go back and forth between the bullets you opened.
  • Ctrl+Space expands or collapses everything in the open bullet.
  • Ctrl+click a reference to open it in a new tab. Ctrl+1 to Ctrl+9 go to a tab, and a middle click closes it.
  • The Random bullet button is a good way to revisit old notes.
  • Your document is a plain text file that any tool can read, see File format. A script can even append lines to it while it is open.
  • Turn off the sidebar features you don’t use in Settings › Features. Their data stays in the file.
